Menopause and the Sea

In recent years Neuroscientists and marine biologists are increasingly becoming aware of  the benefits of the sea for our health and wellbeing. That feeling of peace and calmness that one feels from spending time at the beach is now being referred to as “blue space”. The combination of soothing smells and the sounds of water have a deeply relaxing impact on the brain.

 When you walk beside a beach or swim in the sea endorphins are released. Scientists including Dr Easkey Britton (U.C.G).  agree that  the sea, leaves a hugely positive imprint on our bodies and minds, reducing cortisol levels and lightening mood. During perimenopause I got to the beach 2/3 times per week. I felt great after a walk in the evenings and I also believe it can assist in better sleep.

The blue space can affect us in 4 different ways;

1.Our cortisol/stress levels are reduced. 

Water is natures cure to life’s stressors. Its full of naturally occurring positive ions. So whether you simply dip your toe in the water or dive in for a swim relaxation is guaranteed. Great for hot sweats also.

2.Our creativity increases in our 50’s as an added bonus the beach can boost this.

Scientists now have proven that being in blue space allows one to clear ones head and approach problems or projects in a creative way. I certainly have found that going for a walk beside the sea with a work issue or family issue that is bothering me,allows for more clarity and calmness to reflect, and more often than not find a solution. 

3.Spending time beside the sea assists in reducing mood swings. The hypnotic sound of the waves in combination with the sight and smells of the sea can induce a meditative state, and relief from hormonally induced mood swings and anger. 

4.There can be a spiritual element to spending time beside the sea.

Many report that spending time in nature is good for the soul, much research points to the benefits of tapping into spirituality as we transition through menopause.
